better. ("we", "our", or "the app") is a free food macros tracker for iPhone, built by BSB Apps. by using better., you agree to this policy.
Apple HealthKit data
with your permission, we read body weight, height, step count, active energy, sleep, workouts, and dietary nutrition from Apple Health, and we write back calories, macros (protein, carbs, fat, fiber, sugar), and weight you log in better.
Account information
if you choose to Sign in with Apple, we receive your anonymized Apple user identifier, plus name and email only if you decide to share them (Apple's Private Relay address is supported).
Your profile
information you provide during onboarding: age, gender, height, weight, diet goals, activity level, target weight and date.
Meal and nutrition data
data you log in the app: meal names and timestamps, calorie and macro estimates, micronutrients, water intake, diet plans and planned meals.
Photos and voice input
when you log a meal by photo or by voice:
- Meal photos: the image is sent to our nutrition analysis backend to estimate the food and nutrients in the photo. the image is processed in transit; no personal identifier accompanies the request.
- Voice transcripts: your phone transcribes the audio on-device using Apple Speech, and only the resulting text is sent to our nutrition backend. the raw audio is never sent off the device.
Advertising identifier (only with your consent)
better. is free and ad-supported. we use Google AdMob to deliver advertisements:
- if you tap "Allow" on the iOS App Tracking Transparency prompt, AdMob receives your device advertising identifier (IDFA) so ads can be relevant and performance can be measured.
- if you tap "Ask App Not to Track", the IDFA is not shared and you will see non-personalized, contextual ads only.
- if you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, the Google User Messaging Platform (UMP) consent form is shown first; ads are not loaded until you make a choice. you can change your choice any time from Settings → Ad preferences → Manage ads consent.
- your meals, weight, photos, voice transcripts, and health data are never linked to the advertising identifier.
Analytics and crash reports
we use Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics to improve the app: anonymized usage patterns, crash reports, error logs, and performance metrics. your Apple Sign-in identifier, if any, is hashed with a per-install salt before being passed to Firebase, so the raw identifier never leaves your device.
- App functionality: personalized diet tracking, nutrition analysis, and insights.
- Nutrition analysis: meal descriptions, photos, and voice transcripts are sent to our nutrition backend to return estimates.
- Sync: to synchronize your data across your Apple devices via iCloud.
- Advertising: Google AdMob serves ads in the free version of the app. with your consent (ATT), ads may be personalized.
- Improvements: to fix bugs and improve performance.
iCloud (CloudKit)
your profile, meals, and nutrition data are synced via Apple's CloudKit service:
- encrypted in transit and at rest
- stored in your personal iCloud account
